Dorothy's Giant quilt for Jocelyn

I haven't done an in-depth analysis to see if it's official, but I'm going to have to guess that this is one of the largest quilts I've done. 102x122" - every inch custom quilted. And you wanna talk about HEAVY!

This quilt was made by my quilting friend, Dorothy, for her daughter Jocelyn, whose favorite color is purple. I've never met Jocelyn, but I hear that she's a sewist herself, so I'm assuming she'll appreciate this generous gift from her mom. It's beautiful!

I kept the quilting on the larger scale, so it wasn't stiff as a board and heavy as a hippo. I alternated fills in the squares-inside-squares: overlapping swirls and serpentine.

Then in the pieced border, I attempted new swirling scroll motif that I recently learned at a class taught by a quilting-hero of mine, Angela Walters. Sadly, it doesn't show up well on the contrasting colors and prints in the border. Probably for the best, since it was a new technique for me. I do like how it turned out, so I think it's gonna get added to my catalog!

The thing that totally tickled me was the piano key borders. Since there were solid-fabric borders on each side of the middle border, which Dorothy had pieced into piano keys, I didn't have to mark a thing or worry about measurements at all! I just mirrored the piano keys from her piecing. It was so easy and efficient! No marking, no measuring! Yee haw!

My quilting is all free-motion, hand-guided on an APQS quilting machine.

Mary's Log Cabins

What a fun reincarnation of a traditional log cabin quilt! This color scheme is so gorgeous and youthful. And the arrangement of dark/light values creates a beautiful secondary pattern. I love, love, love it!!!

Edge-to-edge feathered swirls add more whimsy to this piece, as well as some softness and movement.

My quilting is all free-motion, hand-guided on a longarm quilting machine.

Starry Summer Bed Quilt

Carol made this cool quilt as the summer-time cover for her bed. Its muted tones of gray and white are so subtle and relaxing. And we used wool batting, which is said to be warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It's definitely lighter than cotton or polyester - this quilt feels like a feather!

I quilted edge-to-edge swirls and hooks, for some fluidity and movement. I think this will be a great summer quilt for Carol!

Cabin Quilt

Rosemarie made this cozy quilt out of all flannel, front and back. It will be really warm and wonderful in a few months when the snow flies! To go with her nature-themed fabric, I quilted meandering pine boughs and pine cones all over the piece.

This was my first attempted at this quilting motif, and it was tricky. Especially because she wanted it not-too-dense, and the pine-boughs really wanted to get too tightly-quilted. I was constantly fighting my inner-urges while quilting.

But I think the results are super, and I bet this will be one of Rosemarie's most cuddly quilts!

Rosemarie's Navy & Cream Dream

I love this color palette. It's right in my "primitive" wheelhouse. Several of the fabrics had polka-dots or flowers arranged in a polka-dot-fashion, so I used a meandering polka-dot filler in the interior section of the quilt. I treated the two thin inner-borders as a single border and quilted an oak leaf motif into it. And in the stripey outer border, I applied a simple meander. This is going to be another lovely and serviceable utility quilt for Miss Rosemarie.

Playful Snowman quilt

This cozy quilt will be great in a few months when it starts snowing. It is flannel front and back, so it is quite heavy. Right now, though, we're in a heat wave, and I'm sweating from just typing. Heat, heat, go away!

Rosemarie asked for custom quilting on this piece. To give the suggestion of snowflakes, I quilted a dot-to-dot design in each of the cream-and-blue squares. The nine-patch squares got some continuous curve, snowballs, and swirls. And a snowball filler in the cream-and-snowman squares. I think it's cute as a button!
